Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for half-an-hour on Friday after BJP members staged a protest over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's alleged remarks about rape in the nation.

Many BJP members, including ministers, demanded an apology from Gandhi for his remarks, which they said was shameful for the women of the country.

The party memebrs raised slogans in the aisle, which was also occupied by Congress members.

As soon as speaker Om Birla paid tributes to the those martyred in the 2001 Parliament attack, minister of state for parliamentary affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal said several BJP members have submitted notices of adjournment against Gandhi's remarks and they should be allowed to speak.

Meghwal said Gandhi's remarks in Jharkhand's Godda district on Thursday were condemnable and that the Congress leader should apologise in the House.

He said there had been precedents where members have apologised in the Lok Sabha for remarks made outside the House.

BJP MP Locket Chatterjee said Gandhi had insulted women by making remarks that 'Make in India' had become 'rape in India'.

She said all men were not rapists.

Amid the din, the speaker adjourned the proceedings of the House around 11.30am for half-an-hour.
