My character in Dil Diya Hai had grey shades. As an actor, I try to bring variations as far as my character is concerned. It wasn’t for the first time in my career as an actor that I have done a character with grey shades. I had begun my career as an anti-hero with negative shades in Inteha. Earlier, in Fight Club, though I played an out-and-out black character, I gave the character a certain emotional motivation and dubbed my voice in a different style to lend authenticity.
Yes. For the first time in my career, I have acted in a music video with Rituparna Sengupta. Today, I am basking in the light of Banaras, as an actor. The music video shot to promote Hindi songs based on Rabindrasangeet, sung by Indrajit Gupta, is my way of paying my tribute to Rabindranath Tagore. The National Award winning director, Ujjwal Chatterjee, who directed Escape From Taliban has directed it.
It is not the first time that I have done a music video for a cause. Earlier, I had done one for the Haath Se Haath Milao campaign for HIV/ Aids Awareness. I wanted to be a part of this project, because Tagore had tried to give a common platform to people of all castes, creed and colour and as a poet cut across all borders. A song in a music video tells a complete story whereas a song in a film takes the subject from A to B. The video has four different periods and hence I project four different looks. I play a painter who sees Rituparna in his dreams. I sport Bengali-style clothes from different eras and the feel of the video is very dreamy and romantic.
I acted in Fight Club because both Sohail Khan and Vikram Chopra are friends. I did Silsilay for the sake of friendship though my role wasn’t good at all. I was dating Riya Sen then and she had asked me to do the film. I may not be a Salman Khan, but if I can contribute to someone’s career, I will certainly do any film. I acted in Katputtli when Mink asked me to do a friendly appearance. I am an emotional fool and cannot say ‘no’ to a friend.
Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana starring Rekha, Mahima Chaudhary, Kim Sharma and Vasundhara Das is a romantic comedy, with the flavour of urban chick flicks like Sex In The City, Desperate Housewives or, for that matter, Dil Chahta Hai, and you can say that I am the eye candy for all the ladies (laughs).
In Friends Forever, directed by Soumitra Ranade who had earlier directed Jajantaram Mamantaram, I have been cast opposite Hrishita Bhatt. It is a feel-good young film. I play a culturally inclined boy in the film, which is a love story with the accent on college romance. Zampano which is a toy belonging to Hrishita plays a kind of Cupid between us in this part-animation film.
Yes. Rokda starring me with Shamita Shetty, Riya Sen, Tanushree Dutta, Arshad Warsi and Ashish Choudhary revolves around six friends. It is a thrilling action adventure film with inherent comedy. I work in an ad agency in this film, which you cannot bracket in any particular genre. Besides Rokda, I am also acting in a thriller called Rosh with Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia and Shreyas Talpade also directed by Ramesh, who has been an assistant to Ram Gopal Varma.
I am acting in Tum Mere Ho directed by Omar Sharif. I have shot for five days for the film in which my co-stars are Omar Sharif, Rajesh Khanna and Aarti Chhabria. It is a romantic situational comedy.
As of now, I am trying to hone and sharpen my acting skills. My first tryst with acting was when I was in the 12th standard when I was forced to act for the first time in a play. I was the house captain and no one else was ready to act from my class. I think that my career has been picking up slowly and steadily.
I am happy with the creative satisfaction that I have got till date as an actor. All that I can say is that it is great to be a working actor. It is unfortunate that how you perform as an actor does not at all matter in this industry but how well your film does at the box-office. To survive after physical problems and emotional abuses and emerge stronger isn’t an easy task. People take a lifetime to learn the lessons that I have learnt.
