Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi dies at 94, the city hospital on Tuesday said.

Chennai, Aug 7 (PTI): Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi died at at 6.10pm after suffering from prolonged illness, the city hospital where the leader was admitted, said.

”With deep anguish we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 6.10 pm. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond,” a press release by Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director of Kauvery Hospital, said.

”We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide,” it added.

The 94-year old leader was admitted to the hospital on July 28 following a dip in his blood pressure. He is in the intensive care unit since then.

Hundreds of his supporters had swarmed the Kauvery Hospital, praying for the well-being of the leader.

Meanwhile, hundreds of DMK cadres had collected outside the hospital in downtown Alwarpet and the crowd is swelling by the minute.

Many were seen weeping and chanting slogans hailing the leader. A woman supporter was seen fainting and being helped by others who sprinkled water on her face.
