Calcutta, July 11:
A massive fire broke out at the ITC Agrotech godown on Hide Road this evening, where, according to preliminary findings by fire brigade personnel, the company stores vegetable and sunflower oil.
Deputy director of Fire Services Subrata Roy said it required over 150 men and 22 fire-tenders to douse the blaze in a ?risky? four-and-a- half hour operation.
?The ITC godown was stashed with vegetable and other grades of oil, chemical and fertilisers. The flames rose to more than 100 feet,? Roy said.
According to officials at the spot, the ITC had rented the godown from a private company, WareHouse and Cold Storage Limited. There are 15 other godowns in the complex.
Witnesses said guards in the factory opposite the complex noticed flames in the factory shed and informed the fire brigade and police. The first fire tender reached the spot at 4.50 pm.
A mob which had gathered at the spot tried to prevent firemen from entering the compound. Police dispersed the crowd and the firemen soon took up positions.
Roy said: ?We used 1,000 litres of foam, but it did not work. The chemicals did not allow the foam to settle on the flames.? Firemen then used waterjets.
The loss could not be ascertained as no ITC officials were available at the spot. Roy later said no ITC officials had contacted him. ?There is no fire fighting arrangement in the complex. It is a vulnerable area,? Roy said.
State fire services minister Pratim Chatterjee said tonight the fire brigade will lodge an FIR against the authorities. ?I have asked officers to investigate. We will initiate a case and arrest the culprits,? he said.
