Agartala, March 4 :     The Tripura government is introducing a Bill in the forthcoming budget session of the Assembly to amend Section 108 of the Indian Evidence Act. The amendment will make succession to property easier and help access government benefits for family members of those killed by militants after abduction. The proposed Bill will also reduce the period of waiting for confirmation of death to two years from the current seven. The move was initiated by Congress legislator and PCC general secretary Ratan Lal Nath. He had pointed out in the budget session of the Assembly last year that many people were being killed in rebel custody. But their family members had to wait for seven years before they could obtain succession certificates or avail of the government benefits. Chief minister Manik Sarkar announced on the floor of the Assembly that the Act would be suitably amended. Though no Bill was introduced, the government issued a circular in December saying the period of waiting for confirmation of death would be reduced from seven years as required by the Evidence Act to two. Official sources here said a Bill would be introduced in the budget session of the Assembly to amend the Act.
