A clerk of a medical college in Jalaun district, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly pulled a female doctor out of her residence on the college campus and tried to drag her into a corner on the pretext of tying a rakhi on her.

The incident occurred at Government Medical College and Hospital, Orai, on August 19. The doctor filed a written complaint with the Orai police station on the same day, took an indefinite leave from work and went to her home in Agra.

According to a source at the medical college, the administration allegedly tried to cover up the incident. “The principal of the college suspended the clerk Lalit Kumar when the police started probing the case but remained tight-lipped to protect the reputation of the college. Since the incident can be compared with the incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta, everybody is trying to suppress it,” said a source in the college.

“The complainant told the police that Kumar kept banging at her door for a few minutes. She didn’t open the door initially because she was alone. However, fearing that he would break the door, she opened it and saw him in an inebriated condition. Holding a rakhi in one hand, he pulled her out of the house and was trying to drag her to another place. She somehow managed to free herself from his clutch and ran to a neighbour’s house for shelter,” the source said.

Arvind Trivedi, the medical college principal, told reporters: “The police are investigating the case. It wouldn’t be wise for me to make any statement.”

Jalaun superintendent of police Durgesh Kumar said: “The police had registered the case after receiving the complaint and interrogated the accused.”
