Mumbai: A councillor was allegedly assaulted inside the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra and expelled on Friday by a group of BJP representatives after he opposed an attempt to move a motion condoling the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
"I objected to the resolution not because of any personal enmity against Vajpayeeji but I was exercising my right to express my views guaranteed by the Constitution. I did not want to raise hands with the BJP and the Shiv Sena. I just wanted to register my objection," said Syed Matin, a councillor belonging to the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeed (AIMIM).
The 51 elected members of the Shiv Sena-BJP combine later passed a resolution to expel Matin from the House. Two years of Matin's tenure in the corporation are pending.
A delegation from the BJP-Shiv Sena, which runs the civic body, have filed the sedition complaint against Matin.
At the general body meeting, the BJP councillors wanted to condole the death of Vajpayee when Matin stood up to object. He was immediately shouted down by the ruling combine's elected representatives.
Some BJP councillors then allegedly pounced on Matin and started assaulting him. He was admitted to a medical college and hospital.
Video footage showed some BJP councillors chasing Matin out of the chamber while policemen tried to intervene.#After the assault, some MIM supporters damaged a car belonging to a local BJP leader and beat up the driver.
"He has a history of indulging anti-national activities," We have made a formal complaint to the police that he should be booked on sedition charges," said Krishan Chand Tanwani, the BJP's Aurangabad unit president.
Last August, Matin and a Congress councillor had refused to stand up while Vande Mataram was played. "There was no directive from the party. This was his personal decision to object to the condolence proposal," said an MIM leader. The MIM has 25 councillors in the civic body.
