Billboards have come up in Allahabad bearing a cartoon of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reminding him about the skyrocketing price of LPG, the deaths of farmers and lack of employment, prompting police to book a case on charges of hurting national integration and promoting enmity.

The case pertaining to the “objectionable” hoardings, which also had #ByeByeModi written on them, have been registered against unidentified persons and the visuals pulled down.

The hoardings were seen on Saturday morning at Stanley Road near the Traffic Police Crossing in Allahabad city. The police registered the case on Sunday evening on the charges of imputations and assertions prejudicial to national integration and statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will.

The hoardings had a cartoon image of Modi holding a cooking gas cylinder with a strip below that had “Rs 1,105” written on it. They accused the Prime Minister of “taking away lives of many farmers” during the yearlong peasants’ movement against his government’s new farm laws. The hoardings also said: “Dreams of youths have been killed by contract jobs.”

Harendra Singh, the in-charge of the Katra outpost under Colonelganj police station, said: “We have pulled down the hoardings and registered a case against unidentified people under Sections 153B and 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code. We are looking at CCTV footage to identify those who put these up.”

Amit Saran, a BJP Yuva Morcha leader, said he came to know first about the hoardings and got them removed.

Vishwajeet Singh, the station house officer of Colonelganj police station, said: “We registered the case after receiving a complaint from a youth leader and are probing the matter.”

A BJP leader in Lucknow said it was “too early” to comment on who might have put up the billboards but added: “One thing is clear — the Opposition is disturbed with the popularity of Modi.”

A day ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Hyderabad early this month, a billboard had come up that said: “Mr. N Modi, we only rob bank, you rob the whole nation.”

The declaration was accompanied by pictures of the masked characters from Money Heist, the Netflix series that chronicles the saga of eight thieves and a criminal mastermind.

In Secunderabad, hoardings had been put up with “#ByeByeModi” written on them along with slogans such as “Enough Modi” and “Don’t kill people, Modi”. The billboards also had a picture of Modi.
