Bangalore, Jan. 12: The New Year's Eve molesters in the tech city may have claimed another, well, unintended victim - a music concert.
Grammy award winner DJ David Guetta was set to rock Bangalore tonight but the organisers called off the show hours before its scheduled kick-off, citing the law and order situation in the light of the recent molestations.
Police, however, claim they denied permission for the event, scheduled to have been held on the city's northern outskirts, as they were approached late and the date clashed with local elections.
Fallout: The Sunburn dance music festival, featuring Guetta and German musician Robin Schulz, will now kick off in Mumbai tomorrow before moving to Hyderabad the next day and Delhi on Sunday.
Sunburn CEO Karan Singh confirmed that the concert had been scrapped. "Due to present law and order situation in Bengaluru following the events that transpired around New Year's Eve, the authorities have recommended against holding the David Guetta concert scheduled today in the city," Singh said in a media statement issued in Delhi, adding the "authorities" were "understandably... not prepared to take any chances".
The molestations at New Year's Eve celebrations in central Bangalore and an assault on a young woman in an East Bangalore residential locality had brought the tech city a lot of unwelcome attention.
Seemant Kumar Singh, inspector-general of police in charge of the Bangalore region, rubbished the organisers' claim.
"When they (the organisers) came for permission, we categorically told them there was an APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) election on the 12th (of January). So there was no question of the function being held there (on the same day)," the officer said.
"It's the same area where we just held a three-day mega event attended by the Prime minister, the President and other dignitaries without any incident," the officer added, referring to the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas events held a few days ago. The police also said the organisers had approached them for clearance just two days before the concert.
IG Singh said Bangalore Rural police, who handle rural areas in Bangalore district, would issue a notice to the Sunburn organisers for citing law and order problems for scrapping the show.
