Mumbai, Nov. 10: Freelance filmmaker Jerrit John, accused of throwing a chemical at his ex-girlfriend, was arrested this afternoon, three days after the alleged attack that sparked outrage from some of those who had worked with the 46-year-old.
Many posted his photograph on networking sites for him to be recognised and caught.
John, absconding since the Wednesday attack on physiotherapist Aryanka Hosbetkar, was caught outside a hotel in Nala Sopara, on the city’s outskirts, around 2pm, a police official said.
After confirming his identity, Nala Sopara police handed him over to a team from Dadar police station where a case has been registered against John. “We have booked him for theft, wrongful confinement and causing grievous hurt,” deputy commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni said.
Sources said Aryanka was stable and the chemical had been sent for forensic tests
John, who owned a production company, has worked as part of the production crew for various films like Slumdog Millionaire, Don and My Name Is Khan.
Many including Farhan Akhtar, who had directed Don, condemned the attack. “Shame on you Jerrit John. Now come out of hiding, you coward,” Akhtar had tweeted along with John’s photograph.
