Remember the glamping (glamour + camping) trip to Munsiyari a t2 member went on last October and couldn’t stop raving about? Well, the people behind Himalayan Glamping Retreat have now pulled off something even grander.
Former cnbc editor Udayan Mukherjee and his business partner, Kumaoni wildlifer Prashant Bisht, are ready with Shey Bhumi in Ladakh. Spread over a six-acre sea buckthorn orchard, the Shey Bhumi estate houses a Ladakhi mansion that is over a century old. It has been carefully restored to house the dining area and lounge areas of the resort.
Surrounding this house are 10 independent guest cottages built in the traditional Ladakhi style using wooden beams and mud bricks, but equipped with all modern amenities inside.
Around the estate are willow forests, the towering Stok Kangri mountain range on one side and the ancient Thiksey Monastery on the other. The Indus river is a five-minute walk away. The retreat is 30 minutes by road from Leh airport. Other attractions, like Shey Palace and Hemis Monastery, are nearby.
Season begins on May 20 and lasts till September 30. This is the year of the Naropa — the Mahakumbh mela of the Himalayas, which means it happens only once in 12 years. It’s a huge draw for Buddhist tourists from across the world and also Indian travellers. For rates and three- to eight-day Ladakh itineraries, check out www.sheybhumi.com.
We can’t wait to escape the Calcutta sun and sweat for a few days of bliss at this resort. If you beat us to it, tell us all at
