Soty style story

It’s Candyfloss, Yes. But It’s Super Cool Candyfloss! T2 Picks 10 Highlights From The Student Of The Year Style Story Published 29.10.12, 12:00 AM

01 It’s no longer dip-and-dye and the sari for the song is ready. Costume director of the film Manish Malhotra has pulled out all the stops for the desi song sequences like Radha, no short of his couture showings on the catwalk. The chikankari pathani suits, dhoti pants, shimmery lehngas with contrast dupattas teasing the sequinned neon bikini blouse — it’s a fashion feast out there.

02  Move over muscle tees and super-faded jeans. Navel-slashed shirts/kurtas and skinny trousers are here. Abhimanyu (Siddharth Malhotra) and Rohan (Varun Dhawan) are as cool as cool can be. Rohan with his Louis Vuitton Damier checked backpack over his cartoon tees (he’s the richer wannabe rockstar) and Abhimanyu, more sober in stripes. Both such eye candy!

03 It’s no longer about smouldering smokey eyes and nude lips. It’s about a candy mouth and lots of mascara. It’s no longer just about a big blow-dry. It’s about that bling band crowning the blow-dry. And when in Thailand, the diamante is swapped for an orchid. The make-up and hair story, steered by MAC’s Mickey Contractor, breaks all the rules set by Mickey himself!

04  What was John Abraham’s sunshine moment in Dostana is Alia Bhatt’s in SOTY. His yellow trunks, her yellow bikini.... Sadly, the string of the bikini top — and not the bottom — is the only thing revealed in this picture. You will have to see the big picture for the full picture!

05  Kajol, KJo’s lucky mascot, makes a special appearance in The Disco Song. Her shaded sari from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has been ditched for a thigh-high slit black maxi. But her magic remains.

06  Remember the time when the main characters wore made-in-China and the secondary cast wore clothes from Chandni Chowk? Well, SOTY’s supporting cast received no such step-motherly treatment. Special mention for Tanya (played by Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s young Anjali Sana Saeed, in picture) who looked just as hot as Shanaya (Alia). She wore cool clothes and carried fancy bags, including a cracker Lady Dior. So chic!

07  Amitabh Bachchan aka Narayan Shankar’s kurta and shawl from Mohabbatein’s Gurukul is so 2000. In 2012, Rishi Kapoor (in picture) plays Yoginder Vasisht, dean of St. Teresa. And he wears neon green polka-dotted ties with pretty pink kerchiefs, carries an LV briefcase and a matching planner, and tops off his jacket lapels with brooches (from butterfly to bear to bicycle). He also has wayfarers in every colour.

P.S.: Of course, he is gay!

08  The girlie dance does not take place wrapped under a white towel prancing on the house terrace. It’s done, in style, in the locker room in a sheer white babydoll (with boy shorts). Cool or hot or what?!

09  Bikini wax. Push-up bras. Flirty BBMs. From style to lifestyle, this is the conversation between, wait for it, mother and daughter. #win or #fail?

10 Shah Rukh Khan’s blue tee screaming Polo Sport in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai swamped the screens — and the streets — in 1998. Fourteen years later with SOTY, director Karan Johar has given us a full-on logo-laden film. That bag is the Hermes Birkin (in picture right). And that’s just the beginning of the bag story.... Alexander McQueen Knuckle Duster. Gold and shiny LV Speedy. Furla Candy. Jimmy Choo Candy. Stella McCartney Falabella. Chanel. And lots and lots of Louis Vuitton.
