S6E04 of Game of Thrones burned hot

The fourth episode of the sixth season of Game of Thrones, titled Book of the Stranger, was literally A Song of Ice and Fire (the name of the book series by George R.R. Martin that the TV show is based on), with Jon Snow in the icy North and Daenerys Targaryen playing with fire at Vaes Dothrak.

The highs

In an episode full of great moments, the first sequence and the last stand out.

The episode starts with Jon Snow preparing to leave Castle Black but he has to put his plans of departure on hold as who should ride into Castle Black but Sansa Stark, accompanied by Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne! The moment of uncertainty as Jon and Sansa just stare at each other before rushing into an embrace gave us so many feels. It gave us as much of a high as did Sansa standing up for herself and rallying her brother to take back Winterfell.

In the last sequence, Daenerys is brought before the khals for judgement. They give her two options but she gives them one in return — let her lead the khalasar. They roared with laughter and insults about how everyone including the horses would “mount” her for saying that. What does Dany do? Smile and overturn the fire pits, burning everything inside the temple of Dosh Khaleen including the assembled khals. Like in the last episode of S1, Dany emerges from within the burning inferno buck naked and unscathed (in picture). Everyone in the khalasar kneels before her, including Daario Naharis and Jorah Mormont, who had sneaked into Vaes Dothrak. You feel like screaming “Hell yeah! About bloody time”! The Mother of Dragons is back, hopefully to stay.

The Lows

The High Sparrow needs to shut up. He always seems to be lecturing somebody, whether it is King Tommen in the previous episode or captive queen Margaery Tyrell in this episode. Also, Cersei and Jaime are finally getting around to do something about the High Sparrow, but they are still a bit of a bore.

The wtf moment

Osha is brought into Ramsay Bolton’s chamber and we go ‘oh no’ till we see Ramsay smiling slyly at Osha. She asks him if they eat the flesh after they flay the men. He says no. She says she has seen worse. She climbs on his lap and we are lulled into thinking that she might just stay alive, till Ramsay starts rambling about Theon and then stabs Osha in her neck with a knife. As she bleeds out he wipes the knife and goes back to peeling his apple with it. All we want to say is that we take every mean thing we said about Joffrey back. He was an angel!

The best line

Belongs to Tyrion Lannister, of course. “You don’t make peace with your friends. You make peace with your enemies,” he tells Missandei and Grey Worm as he makes a risky deal with the enemies of Meereen.

The number of deaths

At least a dozen. There was one Osha killed by Ramsay and at least half-a-dozen khals burnt by the Khaleesi, not to mention the Dothrakis who were taken care of by Daario and Jorah.

Sex and nudity

We see the Dothraki men having wild sex in the open. And, of course, Dany steps out of the fire naked.

S6E05 airs on May 24 at 10pm on Star World Premiere HD
