The suave Rahul Khanna will once again be seen on the screen, mercifully, this Friday in Dil Kabaddi. Here’s what the handsome dude loves to eat...
The first thing I have in the morning: Is a glass of freshly squeezed juice, preferably orange or sweet lime. I like to eat a light breakfast of boiled egg whites and whole-wheat toast. Then I work out for about an hour.
My diet: I am technically a non-vegetarian, but I stay away from meat as much as possible. I don’t eat red meat at all... I am trying to cut down on chicken, but I like to eat fish. But I am not fussy at all at parties or so.
My lunch: If I am at home, lunch is usually steamed fish and some dal chawal. Food at home is multicuisine. I am not a paneer person, but I love tofu. You can call me Rahul ‘tofu’ Khanna.
My lunch when I am on the sets: I am not fussy about eating unit food either. When you work abroad, depending on the budget of the film, the food can be pretty extravagant. I worked on a film where they had an incredible caterer who served us oysters for lunch and eight different desserts. I always judge catering by the dessert table.
My favourite vegetables: Spinach and bhindi.
My favourite fruits: Grapes and mangoes.
My favourite snack: In between meals, I like to eat a lot of nuts like almonds and raisins. I often like to drink a salty lassi.
My dinner: Is usually a light meal, but I cannot stay away from rice at dinner time. I eat a couple of chapatis, some fish, or some chicken.
My favourite desserts: I love eating chocolates. I can eat any chocolate. And I adore chocolate cake. I love Indian sweets like laddoos, barfis and all. It is a must after dinner. My fridge is incomplete without chocolates and fresh fruits.
A childhood memory associated with food: We were brainwashed into thinking that the food at school was excellent. I guess I liked it when I was in school. You had to stand in line and the spoons would drop on your plates from huge bartans like you see in movies. I spent about two years in St. Xavier’s College, where I remember eating vada pav often. I spent a lot of my time playing squash at the clubs. I loved eating waffles with honey and chicken sandwiches and drank plenty of coconut water.
I love eating: Japanese, Vietnamese, North Indian, Italian and Gujarati food. I have loads of Gujarati friends on whom I depend to get my goodies. I love their food. I simply freak out on aamras and theplas and chunda. I like panipuri and bhel puri too. Our cook makes incredible Punjabi food and excellent parathas. I also love eating at Parsi weddings, the spread called Lagan nu Bhonu. I love Saas ni Machhi.
Eating abroad: There are a lot of Japanese restaurants in New York which I like to frequent. When I was in Singapore, I visited a not-so-well-known place in a housing board where they served excellent sushi. I lived in Singapore for three years when I was with MTV. Life in Singapore was a gastronomic extravaganza for me. I loved the local Chinese stuff like pepper crabs and Hainanese rice. It is a lightly seasoned rice with delicately roasted chicken.
