The play: Sonata, written by Mahesh Elkunchwar. The English play with a smattering of Bengali and Hindi dialogues marks the silver jubilee celebrations of director Sohag Sen’s troupe Ensemble.
The venue: Gyan Manch, 7pm, April 10.
The plot: Three single women in their late 40s get together for a chat on a Sunday evening. As the night wears on, the women get into a blame game. The issues that come to the fore are their strains of staying young, their sexuality and their family ties.
The cast: Hindi stage actress Yama Shroff, theatre-TV actress Anasuya Majumdar and Sohag Sen.
Directorspeak: “The three women are single by choice but they are very different from each other. Two of them stay together, the third joins them for the adda.... At this age, I can relate to and identify with the women of Sonata,” says Sen, who will be returning to the stage after several years. “It wasn’t planned. I would have had to search a lot for an actor to play the third woman, a journalist who lives on the edge,” she explained.
