They Are Young, They Rock... And They Can Bring Lady Gaga Down! Published 12.03.13, 12:00 AM

Pixie Lott

Real name: Victoria Louise “Pixie” Lott

Age: 22

Claim to fame: Her debut single Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh) reached number one on the UK singles chart in 2009 and then came her track Simlish for the hugely-popular Electronic Arts game, The Sims 3.

Fans are called: Crazy Cats.

Inspiration: Stevie Wonder.

Debut album: She got compared to Duffy when Turn It Up (2009) released but her follow-up, Young Foolish Happy (2011), was a mature effort that was more soul than pop.

At present: Last month she worked with comedian Rowan Atkinson on a recreation of Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren’s Goodness Gracious Me.

Passion: Fashion and shopping. Said to be a chip off Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn!

Gabriella Cilmi

Full name: Gabriella Lucia Cilmi

Age: 21

Claim to fame: At age 14 she was performing Rolling Stones’s Jumpin’ Jack Flash at an Italian Fiesta where Warner Music’s Michael Parisi spotted her.

Inspiration: She looks up to Spice Girl Geri Halliwell for her wardrobe and Suzi Quatro, Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin for their music.

Debut album: Though Lessons to Be Learned (2008) was her first, her blistering vocals became famous with Ten (2010), which puts an adult spin on relationships with superhot lyrics. Often compared with Amy Winehouse and Anastacia, the Sweet About Me electro-disco pop star is giving Lady Gaga a run off the charts by sexing up her wardrobe. She once said: “I like it when they write their own songs and when they kind of step into character and become larger than life… I guess I’ve changed to celebrate my body.”

At present: Currently working on her third LP, Gabriella recently met celebrated singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, who has worked with One Direction and Taylor Swift. So, are we looking at a record-making collaboration?

Passion: Badminton and LBDs.

Sky Ferreira

Full name: Sky Tonia Ferreira

Age: 20

Claim to fame: The electropop star has written songs (Elevator) for Britney Spears and as a child spent time with Michael Jackson (her grandma worked with MJ for 25 years). She came into her own with the release of the single One (2010), about “being numb and wanting to feel love, happiness, sadness — anything, really”. After her first EP, As If! (2011), released, her single Obsession was featured on the TV show The Vampire Diaries. And equally well-timed was her ad for Calvin Klein’s CK One Shock perfume.

Inspiration: Cass McCombs and Madonna.

Debut album: Like Lana Del Rey, she churns out teen-oriented music with catchy guitar riffs. Her debut album, I’m Not Alright, which will release next month, is expected to start a new chapter with its Blondie-inspired notes.

At present: She can be seen in the international campaign for Forever 21’s Festival 2013 Capsule Collection.

Passion: Watching TV — is addicted to reruns of Law & Order and My Strange Addiction!

Natalia Kills

Real name: Natalia Keery-Fisher

Age: 26

Claim to fame: She supported wild-girl Ke$ha on the UK leg of her Get Sleazy tour, Katy Perry on her California Dreams tour and then the Black Eyed Peas.

Fans are called: Sweethearts.

Inspiration: Depeche Mode, Rihanna and Eurythmics. Grew up listening to Marilyn Manson (“frighteningly intelligent and gracefully unapologetic”).

Debut album: Her 10-track (plus bonus tracks) Perfectionist (2011) was produced by the who’s who of the music industry –– Martin “Cherry Cherry Boom Boom” Kierszenbaum (Lady Gaga and Akon), Fernando Garibay (U2, Britney Spears), Jeff Bhasker (Beyonce, Sting) and Ron “Neff-u” Feemster (Michael Jackson). The dark-pop album reminded listeners of Depeche Mode.

At present: Her next album, Trouble, is set to release this month.

Passion: Her perfume laced with the smell of aftershaves!

The Saturdays

Line-up: (Left to right in picture) Rochelle Humes (23, former member of S Club 8), Mollie King (25, former member of Fallen Angelz), Frankie Sandford (24, received death threats from fans when she broke up with McFly singer Dougie Poynter), Una Healy (31, voted the ‘Hottest Female 2009’ at the Virgin Media Music Awards) and Vanessa White (23, appeared in the West End production of The Lion King).

Claim to fame: They were the support act for Girls Aloud and Jonas Brothers.

Inspiration: Spice Girls.

Debut album: Unlike Spice Girls, they don’t have a distinct sound but freely move between pop and dance music with style. Their first album, Chasing Lights (2008), was a critical success.

At present: The Chase is all set to release this year. They also have a reality show on E! TV but without Kardashian-style catfights!
