Creature Commandos, an upcoming animated series which is set to launch James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, will release on Max in December, Gunn announced alongside a screenshot of a news report on Thursday.

“See you then on @streamonmax! #creaturecommandos,” Gunn, CEO of DC Studios, wrote on Instagram.

Based on the characters created by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, the seven-episode animated series is a follow-up to Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. It follows A.R.G.U.S. head Amanda Waller creating a black ops team consisting of vicious prisoners. The team of military superhumans consists of a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein's monster and a gorgon — all led by the World War II veteran Rick Flag Sr.

The series features an ensemble voice cast. Viola Davis, who played Waller in the live-action adaptation of The Suicide Squad, lends her voice to her character in the animated series.

While Stranger Things actor David Harbour voices Frankenstein’s monster, Frank Grillo lends his voice to Rick Flag Sr. The cast also includes Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoe Chao as scientist Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Anya Calotra as Circe, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel and Steve Agee as John Economos.

Creature Commandos is the first entry in Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The second project is Superman starring David Corenswet, slated to release on July 11, 2025.

The DC chiefs also have the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow starring House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and Peacemaker Season 2 featuring John Cena in the pipeline.

Earlier in the day, Gunn also announced that comedian Tim Meadows will be playing A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury in Peacemaker Season 2. “Welcome to the #DCU, @real_timmeadows, playing ARGUS agent Langston Fleury in #Peacemaker Season 2,” he wrote alongside a picture with Tim and Steve Agee, who played John Economos in the first season of the series.
