Chances of getting to hear U2 put up one of their dazzling concerts in Calcutta are slim. Size-zero slim. So, listen to the next best thing –– Elevation: the U2 Experience (formed in 2002), a U2 tribute band, today at CC&FC, 8pm...
First, why U2?
We chose U2 because their sound was very similar to our original style and sound. Their appeal worldwide made it a very sensible decision… besides their incredible back catalogue of songs. We wanted to continue our playing careers and this was a vehicle to allow that to happen.
Besides being U2 fans, what connects you to the band?
Many years of admiration for what they have achieved. We see U2 as an inspiration... they have done it the way it should be done... all for one and one for all.
‘Elevation’ is a famed U2 tour of 2001 that came soon after their album All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000). Why did you choose Elevation as your group’s name?
At the time Elevation (track from the album) was a hit in the UK and we liked the sound of it… it linked to the U2 experience. We had to choose a name that would immediately relate to U2 and we wanted people to know what to expect if they came to our performance… our aspiration was and still is to deliver the experience of seeing U2. Elevation: the U2 Experience, we think, delivers all these requirements.
Have you guys met U2?
No, we have never met them… maybe one day we will. We would love them to see us live so they could pass judgement.
Which is your favourite U2 album?
It is between The Joshua Tree (1987) and Achtung Baby (1991)… with The Joshua Tree just about shading it!
Is U2 more than just Bono?
Of course. The group’s success and longevity is a living proof to that. Bono is just part of one of the world’s biggest groups. U2 are a sum of all the parts. And that is what gave them success and they have had the integrity to keep that together.

Why is one of your songs on New (Paul’s forthcoming studio album) called Everybody Out There?
I wanted to write a song that would get the audience singing along.
Does Nancy (Shevell, his wife) have a favourite track on the album?
Nancy says she likes all of them, but I’ll have to ask her about which is her favourite.
What is the last album you bought?
The last albums I bought were by Kanye West, The National and Jay Z.
Are there any current artistes you’d like to do a duet with?
There was a rumour about a year ago that Bob Dylan and I might work together but we haven't picked up on it.
What do you think about the fact a large amount of your current fans are teenagers?
I’m amazed, amused and happy. The band and I are very surprised at what a beautiful young audience we attract!
Describe your fans in three words.
Fan-Bloody-Tastic!
