Students of DPS-Bokaro were treated to some great music when nationally acclaimed sarangi maestro Ustad Kamal Sabri took to the stage on Friday.

The son of sarangi legend late Ustad Sabri Khan of Sainia gharana performed at a programme conducted by the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (Spic Macay). He also interacted with the students and explained the finer points to make Indian classical music more interesting and accessible to the young generation.
Ustad Kamal began the session with Raag Shuddha Sarang, in which he did alaap and jhala in teentaal in jugalbandi with Sukhamoy Banerjee on tabla. He also played folk music from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, besides the Raag Nat Bhairav and a bandish with tabla.

While interacting with the students, the Ustad stressed on the need to spread the essence of Indian culture among the youth through music. “Indian classical music is far richer than any other music and one has to feel it from within,” he said.

Ustad Kamal, who got trained in sarangi by his father from the tender age of 5, has performed in several prestigious national and international concerts and music festivals, including the Art of Bow festival in Geneva, World Music Festival in Lahore and BBC Millennium Concert in International Convention Centre, Birmingham, UK.

He is also the youngest Indian musician to participate in “Les 24 heures du raga” (the 24-hour Millennium Concert) in Paris, France.

Dr Hemlata S. Mohan, director and principal of DPS-Bokaro and secretary, Spic Macay, Jharkhand chapter, felicitated Ustad Kamal and Sukhamoy Banerjee while expressing her gratitude to Spic Macay for its role in uplift of Indian classical music.

Students were bowled over.

Abhishek Kumar of Class IX said he was overwhelmed by the performance.

“This is first time I’m hearing the Ustad live and I’m really impressed with classical music. I’m now considering learning more about it.”

Echoing similar feelings, Swati Kumari of Class XI said, “I started learning classical singing since I was eight. After listening to today’s programme, I can feel how enriched our classical music is and am proud of learning it.”
