Lemme take a loofie!

A year ago: go to the loo, do your business, leave. today: go to the loo, pout, click selfies, add filter, upload and then.... so, t2 visited some of the selfie-worthy washrooms for women around town

FOR THE PUB-CRAWLER: M BAR KITCHEN

The beauty of this washroom at the Park Street gastro pub is the right light and the huge mirror with Turkish-like patterns, a favourite backdrop for girls. The ceiling is High with a capital ‘H’ and lends it a sense of space. All you have to do now is Snapchat the mirror and caption it: ‘Guess where?!’ The framed walls leading to the loo are also a hot spot for loofies (loo+selfie) but keep the angling of the camera in mind to avoid shadows under the eyes.

FOR THE PARTY PROWLER: THE PARK LOBBY

Every time you enter The Park lobby loo, it’s like deja vu. Didn’t you see someone take a selfie the last time you were here? Yes, you did. Blame it on the brilliant lights that add a warm glow to the picture. The small fairy lights turn the ceiling into a starry sky. A panel of neon pink lights running inside the cubicles lend it a nightclub feel. From a mirror selfie to a half selfie, just about everything and more happens in here! If you’re not in there recovering after many Martinis, or listening to girlie gossip, you’re taking a selfie.

FOR THE BAE IN HER OOTD: REVAMPED CASA TOSCANA

‘You look fabulous’. When a wall tells you that, you listen. You pose. You tilt your head. You switch on that swag. You check if the light is right. And you click. In the washroom at the new-look Casa Toscana off Southern Avenue, there’s graffiti everywhere. Look around and spot a ‘selfie’ scribbled on the wall. Here’s a ‘Mwah!’ and there’s ‘My Lipstick’ and ‘OMG’. There’s also an ‘Ok I am done!’ for when you’re finished clicking. “Our aim was to lend the restroom a young, quirky classroom feel. We wanted this place to be a new-age selfie zone,” said Amit Hathiramani, co-director.
Psst: The restaurant has shut doors temporarily. We hope it opens soon... for the sake of selfies!

FOR THE BUBBLY BELLA: SERAFINA

Painted a sunny shade of yellow with pretty China plates adorning the wall, the Serafina restroom at Quest beautifully blends a quaint Italian village with the modern feel of a New York eatery. Bright lights and the yellow wall work together to make your face glow. Then again, it could be the glass of wine you just had with your pizza, that put you in the selfie mood!

FOR THE BLING QUEEN: INOX @ QUEST

The spotless restroom at INOX Quest lives up to its luxury status. Follow your star-like saunter down the carpet during the movie interval with a few (or many) selfies. The metallic walls, black laminated cubicles and changing mood lighting is perfect to put you into the zone, a la your favourite star. Pose, pout and click!
Psst: We hear the boys have it fancy too and often indulge in a quick selfie or two!

THE HAPPY-GO-LUCKY: MRS MAGPIE

The dome-shaped washroom door at Mrs Magpie off Southern Avenue has just the right amount of cute to go click. Painted with a plethora of colours and little magpies sitting atop, it is a selfie-worthy stop for the girlie brigade.

FOR THE MUSIC LOVER: BOHEMIAN

The walls of the restroom at Bohemian in Old Ballygunge 1st Lane are scribbled with lyrics of songs sung by Bryan Adams to Anupam Roy. The riot of colours will brighten up your selfie even if you have no make-up. “We wanted a wacky toilet and so we went wild with colours. The hanging lights are too pretty to be in a restroom but we wanted it to be unique,” said chef Joymalya Banerjee.

COMING SOON: OUT OF D’WORLD

Dear selfieholics, we got a loo(k) at the yet-to-open world cuisine restaurant at The Myx. We love the oh-so-adorbs mirror that will make a great spot for a click — with or without a selfie stick!

FOR THE CRAY: THE IRISH HOUSE

‘Please remain seated for the entire performance’ will crack you up as soon as you, er, sit down. Quirky posters make the 80sq ft washroom at The Irish House in Quest a crazy fun space. The solid green colour on the walls, in sync with the Irish theme, makes up the colour frame. The witty one-liners will make you ROFL. ‘No Peeking’ says one while ‘Please flush before you pass out’ says the other. Our favourite? ‘What goes in must come out’.

FOR THE MEMSAHIB: THE SATURDAY CLUB

A favourite retreat every time the Wood Street club hosts its famous carnivals is the restroom near the reception at The Saturday Club. It’s spacious enough to accommodate all the ladies and ensures no jostling for space. Sit yourself down on their sofas and stare thoughtfully into the distance or take the classic mirror reflection selfie, the choice is yours.

FOR THE DESI HABIBI: URBAN DEZI

An avid Instagram-er knows the importance of the right picture composition. So while one picture from an evening at Urban Dezi in Ballygunge could have you puffing away on the Teen Paan hookah, click another with the Turkish lamp and tiles that do up the bathroom cubicles. #Habibi!

FOR THE STREET CHIC: FIRE AND ICE

Some call  it art and some call it vandalism. We say ‘where there is graffiti there one must click.’ At Fire And Ice opposite Jeevan Deep, after you’re done clicking pictures with the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Madhubala and Gregory Peck, who graciously lend their presence through movie posters dotting the wall, park yourself in front of the double doors leading to the rest rooms. Turn up your collar, add an ample dose of swag and you have your own hardcore selfie — straight from the hood.

FOR THE GOTH GODDESS: 1658 BAR + KITCHEN

Couturier Alexander McQueen, with his penchant for all things dark and beautiful, would have fallen in love with the glamorously gothic setting of 1658 Bar + Kitchen next to the Indian Museum. So while the interiors demand selfies, should you be shy to click that personal selfie in full public glare, click one in the washroom instead. Aromatic candles lend a romantic feel and the rusted mirrors that form a whole wall in the short corridor outside the cubicles add a vintage touch.

BOO TO PARK STREET LOOS

While nothing can replace the fondness we hold for the original food street — Park Street — the sorry state of almost all the restaurant loos deserves a few boos. A strong smell of disinfectant/pee, a lone tube light that morbidly lights up the restroom, the less than flattering whitewashed walls or the pockmarked mirrors — all a thumbs down, considering one has just been romanced by aromatic food. So please, for the sake of our Instagram accounts, jazz up! #SelfieSOS
