Who was in Kangana Ranaut’s firing line during Sunday’s episode of Koffee with Karan. Not “silly ex” Hrithik Roshan, but show host and filmmaker Karan Johar. Through the hour-long episode, Kangana was the assassin with a smile as she ripped through KJo, accusing him of nepotism, saying he has verbal diarrhoea and complaining that he’s given her “unnecessary attitude”.
“This is an unapologetically frivolous show and you always make a lot of sense in your interviews. So I am a little nervous as to what you are going to make of the show,” is how Karan Johar started the episode, addressing Kangana. The Queen’s reply: “Saif and I are going to lend some dignity to the show.”
Kangana on Karan criticising her: “You’ve been the driving force in my life. If it wasn’t for all the rejections and the mocking…. You made fun of my English on this couch. I am not complaining about it, but somewhere these things do drive you. I am not trying to prove anything to you, you have been a driving force….”
She also accused Karan of putting words in Alia Bhatt’s mouth (in the first episode of the season, Karan had asked Alia who in Bollywood would she like to stalk and Alia’s reply was: “Kangana… so many airport looks! I want to know where she is going to and coming from!”). “So now she has an issue not with Alia, but with me. Kangana’s really attacked me on the show!” Karan mock complained to Saif, who seemed stunned by his Rangoon co-star’s shooting from the lip.
KJo as antagonist: “In my biopic, if it’s ever made, you would play this Bollywood biggie who is very snooty and completely intolerant to outsiders. The flag-bearer of nepotism… the movie mafia. The antagonist in my biopic has to be you!” was the KO quip of the episode from Kangana, aimed straight at KJo.
The Rapid Fire round
Karan: Find love and be poor or be rich and single?
Kangana: Your idea of poverty is very different from my idea of poverty!
Karan: Who, according to you, has verbal diarrhoea?
Kangana smilingly pointed to Karan.
Karan: Who has given you unnecessary attitude in the industry — female co-stars or male ones?
Kangana: I think you, Karan.
Minutes later, when Karan says that Kangana has won the Rapid Fire hamper, she says it’s the only way he can “redeem” himself for being mean to her. Her winner speech for Karan? “Thank you for this little redemption, but I think you can do better.”
Towards the end, Shahid Kapoor joins his Rangoon gang on the episode and Karan wants to know what’s the secret behind the “sexiness” that he and Kangana share on screen. Kangana’s ripping retort: “Karan, I know your show is frivolous, but you make our work also sound so frivolous”. Ouch!
Kangana’s other winners
Does she have a 4am friend from the industry? “No, and it’s been conscious. Initially I did, but things got very complicated. Every time I have made a friend in the industry, it hasn’t done me good. It’s only harmed me and my work.”
Her reputation of being opinionated on the sets
“If a set doesn’t have creative conflicts, then something is not going right. I think my directors like that about me… that I fight with them… and the ones who don’t, honestly, I don’t like them either. If you are a dictator, then you aren’t the kind of person I would want to work with.”
She admitted to being jealous of other peoples’ success. “Dangal made so much money… (makes a face)… So much?!”
But Kangana doesn’t want to work with any of the Khans. Why?! “I don’t want to work with anyone where I won’t have an equal role.”
