Kanan Gill on sanskari rap songs, marriage proposals and wear-n-tear

What made you start Pretentious Movie Reviews? Mostly unemployment! And also I like the idea of unhelpful things. Biswa saw a film and came and told me it was the most pretentious film of all time, and the word ‘pretentious’ stuck from there. At the same time, I thought it would be funny to review old films, in a way that had no value as a review, but is funny to watch.

Which one’s your favourite? Which has been the most fun to make?
I think DDLJ is our current favourite. But we cracked ourselves up most shooting (the review for) Hum Saath Saath Hain, where we laughed for hours making sanskari rap songs.

Tell us about The Living Room (an improv sketch comedy show) and how it happened...
Comedy Central approached Kenny (Kenneth Sebastian) to do a TV show. The original vision for the show was quite different, but it came down to an improv sketch show through further ideating. So the show features many comedians who all work together. Kenny and I have been doing sketch comedy on stage for a while, so I’m in a few episodes.

What’s easier –– stand-up or TV?
Unequivocally stand-up.

What’s the secret to your wit?
Growing up with a need for attention!

Who’s your fave comedian?
Hard to name one. But I grew up watching comedians like Eddie Izzard, Mitch Hedberg and Russell Peters. Currently the list is expansive but Louis C.K. and Bill Burr are some personal heroes.

If you weren’t a comic what would you have been?
I’ve already been a software developer. In school I wanted to be a cartoonist, and then an author. I still want to be an author.

Why are you on (match-making mobile app) Tinder?
Once a week, I reject everyone and feel sad.

Weirdest thing a fan has said to you?
I’ve received a genuine marriage proposal. She wanted dowry so it didn’t work out.

Future plans?
Making more videos, getting some music out, writing movies and a book.

The first joke you remember?
In physics class we were learning about how friction causes wear and tear in machines. One of my friends looked at me, and pretended to wear some clothes and then tear them off. We’ve been laughing about this for 15 years.

Are you as funny in real life as you are on screen?
Nope. I’m usually really quiet or really annoying.

Make us laugh!
Wear and tear, guys. First you wear, then you tear. Hilarity ensues.
