In a video shared on X, Yamazaki expressed his excitement for the upcoming project. “Hello everyone, I have wonderful news,” he said. “I’ll be directing the new Godzilla movie. Please stay tuned.”

This announcement follows the international success of Godzilla Minus One, Yamazaki's critically-acclaimed 2023 film that earned an impressive USD 116 million globally, setting a record for a live-action Japanese film. It also won the Oscar for best visual effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

Whether the new film will serve as a sequel to Godzilla Minus One or explore fresh storylines within the franchise is unclear.

Known for his unique approach, Yamazaki not only directed and wrote Godzilla Minus One but also managed all of the film’s visual effects. Toho confirmed that Yamazaki will take on the same extensive creative role for the new movie.

Set in the post-World War II era, Godzilla Minus One follows Koichi, a soldier haunted by his previous encounter with the colossal creature Godzilla. As a new threat looms over Tokyo, Koichi sees an opportunity to redeem himself for his past actions during the war.

Godzilla’s cinematic history spans nearly seven decades and 38 films, beginning with the original Godzilla in 1954. The series has consistently adapted to new themes and technology, drawing global audiences and cementing Godzilla’s place as a cinematic icon.
