Freeze frame: Kate Beckinsale; Jon Hamm; Elizabeth Moss; Keira Knightley

Kate Beckinsale has ruled out a return to the vampire film franchise Underworld. In an interview with Variety, the 45-year-old actress said she is done playing vampire Selene, a character she has essayed in five films so far. “I wouldn’t return. I’ve done plenty of those,” Beckinsale said, revealing that she was attached to the Wonder Woman project when it was in early stages of development. She added Gal Gadot, who eventually landed the role, did a “wonderful” job. “Yes, there was a period of time, a long time ago, when (producer) Joel Silver was involved with it. But it worked out beautifully. That was a wonderful film that Gal (Gadot) did,” she said. Beckinsale has no regrets about not signing on to play the superhero character as the script she was offered was not good.

Mad Men star Jon Hamm has expressed his interest in playing superhero Batman, if the script is right enough for him. Talking to Graham Bensinger in an interview, the 47-year-old actor talked about stories of him taking on the role of Caped Crusader in a new film. “I’ve had rumours about that since probably, since season one of Mad Men. I’ve never... I’ve never had a conversation with anybody about it. Literally. And I’ve sat in the rooms with all these guys. Never been offered anything. I think the Internet wants what it wants. Can’t control the Internet,” Hamm said. The actor said he has always been a comic book fan and has thought about playing the role on screen. “I’m a huge comic book fan, always have been… And I’m pretty knowledgeable about a lot of them. And I like the genre, and I like them when they’re done well,” Hamm said.

The Handmaid’s Tale star Elizabeth Moss has said she studied the documentaries on the lives of Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, and Marilyn Monroe to prepare for her role in the film Her Smell. The 36-year-old actress plays Becky Something, a self-destructive punk rocker who struggles with sobriety while trying to recapture the creative inspiration that led her band to success. “I watched any music documentary I could get my hands on, honestly,” Moss told IndieWire. “All the usual suspects, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which I’d already seen but now I’ve seen a million times, Amy, the Amy Winehouse documentary. And also things on Marilyn Monroe, like that kind of thing, just to get a grasp of that fame and that addiction. Anything I could find about somebody who was incredibly famous or successful, but also dealing with addiction, was very helpful,” she added.

Keira Knightley believes that people do not take period dramas seriously as they tend to focus more on women characters. The 33-year-old actress, who has featured in period films such as Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, said she does not like “negativity” around such movies. “There’s a negativity around (period dramas) because predominantly, they’re female,” the actress said at the Toronto International Film Festival. “The strongest characters I’ve found have been in period roles. I also like the idea of breathing life back into what is gone.” The actress is once again starring in a period drama, Colette, based on the life of the novelist Colette.
