t2 met the DubVision brothers — Victor and Stephan Leicher — before their gig at India Bike Week in Goa recently. A chat...
Is it true that you were “forced” to play at least one instrument while growing up?
Stephan: Our parents forced us to play at least one instrument because they thought it was good for our general education. So we chose the piano and I think it helped us a lot because we like to make melodic music and it’s just pretty nice to be able to play the piano and find chorus and progressions and melodies pretty fast.
Do you two ever fight like most siblings do?
Victor: (Laughs) Yeah sometimes! Mostly while travelling and you get really agitated. We spend so much time with each other, it’s bound to happen.
Stephan: It’s a good thing that we’re brothers, so we know what to expect from each other!
From your “in your face, hands in the air” style of music, pick one that never fails to rock the crowd...
I think Triton with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano because it’s really energetic and the crowd really likes it.
From Pacha to Vegas, where did you have the best audience?
Victor: That’s a hard one! Yesterday we played in Pune — it was a college party so there were young, enthusiastic people. But America’s also a lot of fun… Miami and LA... (thinks) the best, umm, for me personally would be Ibiza, Spain; it was pretty awesome. Ibiza is like this party island, so everybody goes there for music and to party... so it’s got a really nice atmosphere.
Stephan: I like the Marquee Las Vegas Nightclub where we played a few weeks back (January 10).
Tell us more about your recent release Rockin (released on January 24). How is it different from your previous tracks?
Stephan: It’s something different because it’s a bit harder, which is a trend these days. It’s a collaboration with Firebeatz, who’s a Dutch guy, and we made it in like two days or something!
Is two days all it takes to usually make songs?
Victor: Na, na (shakes head)… sometimes it takes several months and sometimes it goes in a day. All By Myself (their first release) took very long; we made the concept in like a day but it took a really long time to finish it.
Swedish House Music, David Guetta, Tiesto… what do they say about your music?
Victor: They love our tracks! When we met (electronic dance music biggie) Swedish House Mafia, they told us they really love the way we stick to our progressive roots and melodic tracks. They play Rour tracks edux, All By Myself, Committed to Sparkle Motion and Triton and it’s really exciting for us… getting knowledge from the Swedes is, for us, the biggest achievement. We personally think that the Swedes, their melodies and their way of putting vocals into melodies and just the way they produce is totally our style, more than what the Dutch DJs make. Nicky Romero (Dutch DJ) loves us, Afrojack (Dutch DJ) loves us, we also made a remix for Avicii I Could Be The One and he plays it all the time…
Have you heard any Indian music?
Stephan: Like Bollywood music? (Laughs) Yeah, we’ve heard it on the radio and it’s nice. Very, er, happy!

BEATPORT BIO: Brothers Stephan (born in 1981) and Victor Leicher (born in 1989) together make up the Dutch DJ and producing duo called DubVision. At an early age, Victor started experimenting with electronic music, using all sorts of computer programmes. After seeing his little brother producing some strong beats, Steve got interested and the two decided to team up. This was such a success that they started producing music on a daily basis. After a while they came up with the name DubVision.
Lessons from Miley:
Miley Cyrus hopes her upcoming worldwide tour, Bangerz, will be “educational”. Criticised for her twerking skills, the We Can’t Stop singer told her sister Brandi (who works for Fuse News) in an interview: “Even though parents probably won’t think this, I think my show is educational for kids because of the art they’re going to be exposed to that most people don’t know about…. It’s so funny how people get so riled up about Miley’s videos…. If you go back and look at the Motley Crue videos, the Bon Jovi videos…it was all girls, half-naked, and dancing and partying. It was all sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll.”

Bigger than the Beatles?
More screaming girls but talent is another thing. One Direction’s Harry Styles told Top of the Pops magazine that watching footage of The Beatles arrive in the US for their 1964 tour reminded him of his band. “Stepping off the plane, the girls, the madness, it was exactly the same as when we got there — just 50 years earlier.” But he quickly added: “But none of us think we’re in the same league as them music-wise. We’d be total fools if we did. Fame-wise it’s probably even bigger, but we don’t stand anywhere near them in terms of music.”
