DURGAPUR COMES OF AGE AS A HOTSPOT WITH THE SIGNATURE FASHION PARTIES, IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE TELEGRAPH Published 31.08.11, 12:00 AM
MAKING WAVES: Designer Debarun Mukherjee’s Chanachur collection at the Signature Fashion Parties in Durgapur on Friday

What: Signature Fashion Parties, in association with The Telegraph.

Where: Peerless Sarovar Portico, Durgapur.

When: Friday, August 26.

COUTURE COUPLE: “I’m from Delhi and a total party animal. I thoroughly enjoyed the party tonight. It was great fun,” said Anirvan Karmakar, a doctor currently based in Durgapur, wife Gouri by his side.

After rocking Bhubaneswar and Rourkela earlier this month, the Signature Fashion Parties caravan rolled into Durgapur on August 26 with a fashion show, music, dance, sumptuous eats and exciting sips. With sprawling malls, big labels, restaurant chains and corporate investments, Durgapur is today a bustling hub of opportunities and youthfulness, raring to catch the party fever from big brother Calcutta.

FASH FRAT: “This party was a nice concept. Seeing a fashion show was very interesting. With the mall culture coming up here, Durgapur is rapidly gearing up for the fashion industry,” said Parul Bajoria, who runs a fashion designing institute in Durgapur.

Friday night’s party was the first of its kind in Durgapur and the residents came out in numbers to enjoy themselves.

“I am feeling great tonight. I have been to such parties in Calcutta and I am happy that things are happening in Durgapur now. In recent years, Durgapur has emerged as an educational and corporate hub. It is gradually developing a social life that is similar to a metro,” gushed Sumana Dutta, a teacher at DAV Model School, Durgapur.

Designer Debarun Mukherjee showcased two collections — Chanachur and Spanish Dream — with model Urvashi Sharma as showstopper. While Chanachur was a fusion of earthy colours, Spanish Dream, choreographed to the tune of Senorita from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, flaunted floral designs.

CHILD'S PLAY: After the fashion show, the ramp was taken over by these little stars. As the elders enjoyed their drinks and dinner, the children played showstopper!

And the 250-strong crowd loved it all. “It is a fantastic party. Born and brought up in Durgapur, I can say that with so much investment in Durgapur in the last few years, the people here have an upgraded lifestyle. Such parties are a part of this change,” smiled Soumen Routh, an insurance professional.

Those walking the ramp also shook a leg or two, while the audience clapped and grooved to recent Bolly numbers and old hits spun out by DJ Javis.
