Have you recently noticed people covering their face, almost like in shame? Nope, it’s not that. It’s also not because it’s too sunny. They’re not crying and they’re definitely not hiding their face because they owe you money. They are doing the dab dance! Here’s all you need to know about the craze.
What’s the dab?
A part of a dance form, where you lower your face, lift one arm in the air and cover your face with another.
How did it start?
It originated in the hip-hop scene of Atlanta, USA, but there are several disagreements regarding who was the first artiste to do it. Migos, Skippa Da Flippa, Peewee Longway, Jose Guapo and Rich The Kid are some of the artistes who’ve done the dab.
So why the sudden rage?
The move was picked up from one of the music videos by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who did the dab during an American football game, making it a rage in USA. Manchester United footballer Paul Pogba, the costliest in history, made it a household name on the other side of the Pacific. Several athletes have since gone on to do the dab to celebrate a goal or a wicket.
Why have some people called it a disgrace?
Believe it or not, dabbing is also a term used for smoking butane hash oil and apparently, some think it represents sneezing, which happens to people after taking a lot of cannabis.
URBAN DICTIONARY SAYS
A dance craze that originated in Atlanta. You don’t just do the Dab, you feel the Dab! Let the beat guide you and when the drop comes in, you tilt your head into your inner elbow while simultaneously lifting your right forearm; sneezing is a good example. The dab is all about swagger, there’s nothing cool about whippin’ your head aimlessly.
