The smell of dhuno and the sound of dhaak make Durga Puja what it is. The residents of South City Residency are geared up to celebrate the next five days of the festival with a whole lot of merriment. The South City Residents Puja Committee presents Utsav 2017, in association with t2, will ensure just that. We dropped in on Saturday when The Jio LED Dhaaki activity took place at the Prince Anwar Shah address as a part of Jio Digital Life presents The Telegraph Hand in Hand in 10-odd venues across the city, with actress Swastika Mukherjee upping the glam quotient. “It is very exciting to see most pandals with the idols already. Today is Tritiya and Durga Puja has started! Earlier, Puja would start from Sashthi… when we were young, Durga Puja was a five-day festival. But from the last year or so, Puja has become a 10-day carnival. The idols come on Prathama and yesterday, I saw people standing in queue and pandal-hopping in Kasba!” smiled Swastika at South City Residency.
“For me, the must-do activities during Puja are giving anjali during sandhi puja, wearing new saris every morning and evening, and making sure not to repeat even one sari! And then, of course, eating bhog! I eat all the khichudi and payesh, and everything else that will add to my weight. The must quotient is to be happy!” smiled Swastika, stunning in an Assamese sari, trying her hand at playing the dhaak.
Most can’t help but groove once the dhaak starts playing. And when there are prizes to be won, even more so! Once the Jio LED Dhaaki started their beats, the dance floor was instantly full of people showing off varied dance moves.
It was time to pick the winners and Swastika didn’t bat an eyelid to choose the first one. “He had too much spirit and started dancing right from the first beat of the dhaak!” she said, pointing to Rajeev Duggar. “I usually cannot stop my feet when the dhaak plays! It felt nice because Swastika selected me as the winner and I love how she’s flamboyant and versatile,” said Rajeev, who has been a resident of South City for the past four years.
Doesn’t matter if you have a broken bone or two, dhaak = dance!
The other winners of the night were a group of ladies who received their prizes from Swastika and Subhendu Bhattacharjee, vice president, state head, Kolkata, of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited. “It was really nice to interact with Swastika because I’ve been a big fan of hers right from when she would do serials. I had other plans tonight but I cancelled them to be here,” said Mahua Atta (fourth from right), who won a trophy as well as a Jio WiFi dongle, to be shared with her gang!
