The India auditions |
Getting to do a film about dance and costumes with the Farah Khan… I think I was ‘in’ from the word ‘go’!” says Priyanjali Lahiri, the secondary costume stylist for Happy New Year. The Loreto House girl from Southern Avenue, who assisted Bollywood’s top stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania for five years, has dressed Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, Vivaan Shah in HNY. Priyanjali decodes the look of “Charlie’s angels”!

Boman Irani: He is this dude from a Parsi colony. We gave him these bowling shirts that were retro and vintage. A lot of Parsis try to cling on to an old-world charm. We gave him checked shorts. He wore socks with loafers. Sorbet was his palette. He wore hats and a vintage watch. We kept it quirky. Then there was the bag out of which things would pop out all the time. That was very crucial! Farah was like, ‘We would see that bag from the beginning till the end’. We had six of those bags.

Vivaan Shah: He’s the geek. So, we gave him a lot of comic-print tees, hoodies and Converse shoes. A very easy and boy-next-door look. His palette was quite bright compared to the others, with lots of reds and yellows.

Sonu Sood: We gave him a wardrobe that his body looks good in. So, a lot of fitted tees, cargo pants and boots because of his military background. Sonu’s palette also consisted of military colours like moss green, chocolate brown, navy blue, grey and a lot of black. Plus, a certain amount of checks.
The dance costumes: We learnt from Farah about what looks great on stage. We went with a certain amount of bling and craziness — with the sensibility that Mohini (Deepika Padukone) brought in— in their India leg. The gold cape was Farah’s tribute to the ’80s. We were looking at a lot of ’80s reference like Abba, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. Fashion was insane in the ’80s. The HNY team had a sequinned jewel-tone top with silver pants, silver shoes and silver accessories! And, they had this metallic diamond pendants hanging in front. They all had these headbands, again from the ’80s. For their India finals, there was again a lot of ’80s reference. Geometric lines, patchwork and contrast. The World Dance Championship semis were a crazy ode to Michael Jackson, which Farah was very sure she wanted to do. Their red-and-black outfit with lights was inspired by MJ’s Thriller outfit. By the time they reached the World Dance Championship finals, they also wanted to stand for something and make a point. That was also an ode to India. We did these short blue bandhgala jackets, dhoti pants and colourful bundis.
