Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller Oppenheimer stole the spotlight at the 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday, by bagging seven trophies including Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Film.
Yorgos Lanthimos' dark comedy Poor Things also had a notable presence at the awards, securing Best Actress award for Emma Stone and four other wins. Stone, a previous winner in 2017 for La La Land, delivered a standout performance as a Victorian reanimated corpse in the movie.
The atmosphere at the awards ceremony was electric as David Tennant, hosting for the first time, guided the audience through an evening celebrating the best in cinematic achievement.
The Zone of Interest, a Holocaust drama shot in Poland with a largely German cast, claimed the titles of both Best British Film and Best Film Not in English. The French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall, which had won the Palme d'Or award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, bagged the prize for Best Original Screenplay.
Despite high expectations, the historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon left the ceremony empty-handed despite receiving nine nominations. Similarly, Barbie, part of the 2023 box office phenomenon Barbenheimer and the year's highest-grossing film, failed to secure any wins from its five nominations.
