Apple TV+ has announced a four-part docu-series on football legend Lionel Messi with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of his stellar career, including the FIFA World Cup win in 2022.

On June 6, the streamer confirmed the news on Twitter. “Barcelona Paris Saint-Germain Argentina Apple TV+,” it wrote in the microblogging site a day after the news was broken by the US-based entertainment portal Deadline.

The announcement was made a day prior to the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner’s confirmation that he would play for the Major League Soccer (MLS) team Inter Miami from the next season (2023-24). On Wednesday late night, Messi revealed that he would sign for the club co-owned by ex-England international David Beckham. Apple TV is also the live-streaming partner of MLS.

The docu-series will chronicle Messi’s journey with the Argentine national team and his quest for the World Cup title. Shot in Paris, Spain and Argentina, the show will chronicle how the football player realised his lifelong dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy at the fag end of his career in a thrilling summit clash against defending champions France in Qatar last year.

Apart from featuring interviews with Messi’s teammates, coaches, competitors and fans, the makers have followed the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner throughout the 2022 World Cup.

Some of the series highlights are set to be Messi’s eventful Argentina debut in which he was shown the red card in the very first minute, his shock retirement decision in 2016 and his comeback to lead his national team to World Cup glory.

Apple produces the series for Smuggler Entertainment in association with Pesga. Emmy winner Pastore, Emmy and Tony Award-winners Smith and Carmody and Emmy winner Renner of Smuggler Entertainment, alongside Jon Henion and Juan Camilo Cruz, will serve as executive producers to the show.
