Joey King’s Zara lands in an uncomfortable situation upon discovering the brewing romance between her mother Brooke (Nicole Kidman) and her movie star boss Chris (Zac Efron), leading to comedic mishaps in the trailer of Richard LaGravenese’s upcoming romantic comedy A Family Affair.

Dropped by streaming platform Netflix on Wednesday, the two-minute-13-second-long trailer begins with Joey King’s Zara walking in on her mother sharing an intimate moment with Chris. While trying to run out of the room, Zara bangs her head against a door and passes out. “Zara, if you can hear me, name the movie I won the Teen Choice Award for,” asks Chris as he tries to bring her round. Zara dismisses his question by showing him the middle finger.

As Brooke and Chris’s romance continues, Zara grows increasingly critical of their relationship, fearing that her boss’s self-absorption would end up hurting her mother. Kathy Bates, who plays Kidman’s mother Leila, urges her to recognise that she is an individual before being someone’s parent.

After Brooke and Chris indulge in a romantic dinner, Zara urges them to call off their “gross sexcapade” at once. Much to Zara’s annoyance, Brooke admits that she has begun developing feelings for Chris. Despite Zara's initial resistance, Leila convinces her to let Chris visit her mother for Christmas. The trailer concludes with Leila and Brooke sharing a laugh, hinting at a renewed exploration of love and acceptance.

A Family Affair also stars American YouTuber Liza Koshy.

The film is penned by Carrie Solomon and produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum. Michelle Morrissey, Alyssa Altman and Solomon serve as executive producers.

A Family Affair is set to premiere on Netflix on June 28.
