Actress Vidya Balan's Career Took Off After Kismat Konnection Published 02.01.11, 12:00 AM

Every small event can become a turning point in an actor’s career. Though I’m at a fairly nascent stage in my career, I can say that the film Kismat Konnection was an important phase for me. After the release of the film, I was inundated with offers and all of a sudden the scenario changed for me altogether. Though I’m very clear and unapologetic about my choice of films, this phase proved to be significant in my career.

My first film, Parineeta, with Pradeep Sarkar was no less significant and I was fortunate to launch my career by playing such a layered role. On the other hand, Ishqiya was a completely different role and I enjoyed it thoroughly as well. Each film has marked a different phase in my career.

I am happy at the way my career has shaped up as I have had the chance to play a huge variety of roles — emotional, romantic, serious and comedy. I think there’s a schizophrenic in me who wants to do diverse things at different points of time.

Today, I don’t think that distinct categories of parallel cinema and mainstream films exist as actors are willing to try out various genres. Often, the most demanding roles are easier to portray while the simple roles fail you. I always itch to do different roles because that’s what my job is as an actor. I don’t want to restrict myself to a particular genre.

I am looking forward to my next film, Kahani, directed by Sujoy Ghosh. It’s been a wonderful experience working in this film. I am hoping that this too proves to be another important milestone in my career.

(As told to Sushmita Biswas)
