MEXT, Japan

What is it: MEXT or the Monbukagakusho Programme 2019, a Japanese government scholarship, offers opportunities to study in universities (undergraduate level), colleges of technology and specialised training colleges in Japan. 
The undergraduate programme is a five-year one for those who wish to study in a Japanese university. It comprises a year of Japanese language training and four years of a bachelor’s degree. Scholarships cover multiple disciplines (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, agricultural studies, medicine, dentistry and so on).

Who can apply: Students who have academic ability equal to that of a high school graduate.

TASS, Edinburgh

What is it: The Talented Athlete Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme (TASS) is a Sports England-funded partnership between athletes, education institutions and national governing bodies of sport. The scheme supports talented athletes in education — aged 16-plus — find and manage the balance between their sporting and academic careers, by providing them access to support services such as strength and conditioning, physiotherapy and lifestyle. TASS is now available at the University of Edinburgh in the UK. Scholarships are available for undergraduate study in the fields of arts and law, engineering and physical sciences, life and environmental sciences, medical and dental sciences as well as social sciences.

Who can apply: A variety of paralympic, winter and summer sports are considered but the applicant must have national recognition in a sport, at least at the under-18 level. Scholars may study any subject. If English is not your first language, you will need to show that your English language skills are good enough for you to understand and succeed in your studies.
