I received a very interesting query by mail the other day. Why do July and August have 31 days? Well, according to legend, July, which already had 31 days, was named after Julius Caesar. When Augustus became emperor, he wanted the following month to be named in his honour. But he could not accept that ‘his’ month had a day less. So he impressed upon the elders and ensured that a day was axed from February and added to his month — August. The Romans became wise and decided to stop naming the months after their kings.
