Robert Burns’ Auld Lang Syne has long been the traditional way to bring in the New Year. The poet wrote the piece in 1788 and it was set to the tune of a traditional folk song. The song has also been the inspiration behind the ever-popular Purano shei diner kotha composed by Rabindranath Tagore. As we robustly belt out the song tomorrow night, we will bid goodbye to another year gone by. 2012 had its ups, with London organising a successful Games; CERN announcing the discovery of a new particle; Curiosity, the Mars rover, giving us close-ups from the red planet’s surface, and KKR winning the IPL. But it had its downs too: Hurricane Sandy and Typhoon Bopha caused havoc; India witnessed the worst ever power blackout in history and our cricket team were mauled by England at home. Let’s pray that 2013 is a good year for all of us. Happy New Year!
