New Delhi, Feb. 7: Norwegian information technology minister Rigmor Aasrud today met her Indian counterpart Kapil Sibal to discuss possible solutions to safeguard its Indian investments.

Norway wants a transparent and stable policy regime in India, which will ensure that Norwegian companies get an equal opportunity to develop their markets.

Sources said Sibal and Aasrud discussed the new auction process that would take place later this year as well as options that would ensure the continuation of Telenor’s mobile operations in the country.

Telenor offers mobile services under the Uninor brand through its 67 per cent joint venture with domestic real estate player Unitech.

It has invested around Rs 14,000 crore in its Indian operations.

Last week, Telenor lost its pan-India mobile permit after the Supreme Court quashed 122 licences given by former telecom minister A. Raja. The apex court also directed telecom regulator Trai to auction the airwaves held by these companies.

The Norwegian government holds 54 per cent in Telenor and wants the company to continue its mobile operations in the country.

The mobile company also has operations in other Asian countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand.

“We had a good, fruitful and constructive meeting with the telecom minister. We took up Telenor’s case along with other issues,” Aasrud told reporters after the meeting.
