New Delhi, March 6 :     The department of telecommunications (DoT) has opened up its broad based user group (BUG) technology for commercial exploitation. This new category has been created by DoT within closed user group (CUG) technology which is available to government departments. It will help interconnecting different private networks with common interest. Using the BUG technology, a company can offer services like financial position in stocks, latest news and reservation position of trains and airlines on a commercial basis. The services of BUG can be sold with or without tele-transaction capability. The new networks can obtain leased lines from either DoT or use public data networks like Inet offered by telecom department. A leased line is a dedicated point-to-point line used for data communications unlike normal dial-up telephone lines and are active all the time. The Telecom Commission is expected to soon draft the tariffs for using BUG services. However it is not clear, whether DoT will approach Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to seek its recommendation for fixing the final tariff. Besides, this is not a new service but an extension of an already existing service and it does not fall under the purview of Trai, said sources in DoT. The Trai had struck down the government?s internet service providers (ISP) policy saying it was mandatory for DoT to take its recommendation for introducing a new service provider. The Telecom Commission will also work on rationalisation of tariff for connecting to DoTs Inet service, high speed very small aperture terminal networks (Hvnet) and remote area business management network (RABMN). The opening up of BUG follows a recent suggestion by the telecom commission, to give over CUG for captive networks. Regrading preferences in allotment, sources said that ?it was decided that only the ministry of defence and para military forces should be given preference as VSAT is an efficient medium of communication in remote locations.
