02 targets 35% of PDA phone market

Calcutta, May 9: PDA phone giant 02 aims to capture a 35 per cent market share in India. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Spain’s Telefonica.

PDA phones are based on the Windows platform, and according to a Microsoft study, the market size for such phones is two lakh units.

The phones have touch-screens and hosts Office applications. Smart phones also use the Windows platform. They do not have touch-screens but hosts multimedia applications.

“We have recently set up a liaison office and help desk in India. We have three models and plan to launch five more models. India is expected to emerge as one of the major growth areas for O2 devices in the Asia Pacific region,” said Myilravan Nathar, country manager — India, O2 Asia Pacific & Middle East.

The three models available in India are Atom, Atom Exe and Stealth. The prices start from Rs 25,000. O2 has tied up with Brightpoint India to distribute the handsets across 440 outlets in 32 cities.

The PDA phones offer a host of features such as digital organiser, web browser, e-mail, speaker phone and SMS. There are four other PDA phone companies on the Windows mobile platform — the HP iPAQ, i-Mate, PDA Pedal and Dopod.

The entry level price for the iPAQ is Rs 25,000. It is Rs 11,000 for the I-Mate, Rs 23,500 for the PDA Pedal and Rs 22,893 for the Dopod.
