National Service Scheme members of Patna Women's College visited slums in Kamala Nehru Nagar and Cheenakoti from January 7-10 for a survey on the living condition in the areas.

The programme was part of a seven-day special camp on social justice. Around 40 students took part in the event to make people in the slums aware about their rights and government schemes.

A series of seminars were also conducted at the college campus, apart from presentations on economic condition, health status and literacy rate of the people.

One of the guest lecturers, Pooja Tripathi, the co-ordinator of non-government organisation Muskan, motivated the students in their endeavour.

Shreya Sangam, one of the NSS volunteers who attended the special camp, said: 'The students were divided in three categories - economic, health and literacy status of the slum dwellers. We all know about the financially underprivileged sections of society but I never visited any slum area before this. So, it really shocked me. They are absolutely deprived of benefits of all the government schemes and plans. We tried to make them aware about their rights.'

Another volunteer, Madhulika said: 'I visited 15 households and told the families why their children should attend school. I came to know at Kamala Nehru Nagar that not a single child went to school. Instead, they were all engaged in pottery work. The people are not even aware about polio immunisation.'

Teachers should be able to motivate their students to achieve their goals, said Rashmi Jain, an alumna of Patna Women's College, addressing the BEd students of the college at a lecture organised on January 12.

Jain is a social activist and has been working in the field of education and uplift of women for several years now.

At the lecture, she said: 'Teachers should not be afraid to ask their students hard questions. They should always look for ways to strike a rapport with their students, especially those who are a little reserved.'

Assistant professor in the BEd department Sister M Saroj said: 'The lecture was organised to help the teachers-in-training learn ways to properly deal with their students in the future.'

Ophthalmologist A. Bhaskar Naidu from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, held a voluntary eye check-up camp on the Patna campus of Central University of Bihar on Monday.

The camp conducted for students, faculty members and university employees was formally inaugurated by registrar Mohammad Nehal, said the public relations officer, Mohammad Mudassir Alam. 'There was a good response to the camp. So, Dr Naidu would conduct the camp for the next couple of days too. He has established a proper set-up for the check-up camps and has even brought the essential medicines.'
