Patna: A 21-year-old married woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her house located under the jurisdiction of Alamganj police station in Patna City on Saturday.

Police said the woman, identified as Bobby Kumari, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her house near the Polytechnic College. Her husband Mohammad Firoz, 25, was absent from the house when a police team reached the spot after getting information from some residents.

The residents told the police the couple used to quarrel over dowry. Firoz was allegedly exerting pressure on Bobby to bring dowry from her father while she was refusing to do so. As a result Firoz used to thrash her and even threatened to marry another woman.

Firoz and Bobby had fallen in love with each other and married about four years ago. The couple have a baby.

As Firoz had no work, he would often torture his wife, which compelled the woman to take the extreme step, said a police officer who visited the spot and sent the body for post mortem.

The police officer, who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to journalists, said the woman's husband was absconding after the incident.

Some relatives, who were present in the house, said Bobby had narrated her ordeal to her mother and father a few weeks ago.

The police recovered Bobby's body and sent it to the Nalanda Medical College and Hosptial (NMCH) for post mortem.

"The autopsy report is awaited. A case of unnatural death has been lodged," the police officer posted at the Alamganj police station said.
