Violence after police shoot at truck driver

Violence erupted at the Didarganj toll plaza in Patna City on Friday after a constable assisting a motor vehicle inspection team shot at the driver of a truck going to Bakhtiyarpur from Patna.Eyewitnesses said trouble started around 4pm when the team demanded the truck papers from the driver, Ajit Kumar Pandey, for checking. Thereafter, the team allegedly sought money from him.Drivers passing the spot saw him being shot at, and protested. Pandey was rushed to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable. Soon a large number of police personnel gathered at the spot. Residents pelted them with stones. Closed-circuit television cameras installed at the plaza were also damaged. Mahavir Ram, a local resident, said: 'On several occasions, police patrol and motor vehicle inspection teams demand money from drivers.' The violence continued for more than an hour. Digha police station house officer RK Dubey suffered head injuries and is undergoing treatment at Kurji Holy Family Hospital. Text by Roshan Kumar, picture by Sachin
