Administrative work at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University was suspended on Tuesday after hostel boarders allegedly went on the rampage for not being allowed inside the building.
A group of students, mostly boarders of the postgraduate hostels and Langat Singh College’s Duke Hostel, came to the campus around 11am.
Sources said they wanted to speak to vice-chancellor Pandit Palande about streamlining the academic session.
As Palande recently issued orders that students or outsiders should not loiter around the administrative building, the security personnel deployed on the campus asked for the identity cards of the group. Infuriated over being asked for their identity cards, the students went on the rampage.
The students got into a fight with the security personnel and uprooted the iron gate at the residence of vice-chancellor Palande. They even raised slogans against the alleged failure of the university employees in streamlining the academic session that is running at a delay of at least two years.
Employees in the administrative building ran for help when the group started pelting them with stones. Some officials were also dragged out from their offices.
With the students taking the path of agitation, work at the administrative building had to be suspended. The classes were, however, not disrupted.
Apprehending trouble, Palande called deputy superintendent of police (city) A.K. Singh and sub-divisional officer (east) Sunil Kumar to come with reinforcements and control the mob.
Ajay Kumar Srivastava, the university’s proctor- cum-spokesperson, said: “The university is determined to check the entry of outsiders inside the administrative building to give the emplo-yees a peaceful atmosphere to carry on their duties. This has hurt many vested interests but the vice-chancellor has held talks with the agitating students to resolve the matter.”
