Patna, Sept. 28: The Patna University administration has decided to do away with the process of felicitating undergraduate toppers citing technical reasons.

In the past two years, the vice-chancellor (VC) felicitated undergraduate toppers in various subjects on the foundation day.

Patna University VC Arun Kumar Sinha said: “There will be no felicitation of undergraduate toppers, as the results of the courses were declared late. Students have also challenged the results.”

In 2011, former VC Shambhu Nath Singh started felicitating toppers in the undergraduate courses to encourage healthy competition.

Last year, around 40 students, with a majority of girls, were honoured with gold medals by the varsity administration at the foundation day function. Earlier, only postgraduate toppers were honoured with medals at the convocation functions.

The students are naturally upset over the university’s move of doing away with the felicitation ceremony.

Ravi Kumar, a second semester postgraduate geology student said: “The university should have continued with the process of felicitating undergraduate toppers, as it created a sense of competitiveness among the students. ”

The university has started preparations for the foundation day event on October 1.
