Muzaffarpur, Feb. 28: The syndicate meeting of Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bihar University, held on Saturday, passed a plethora of resolutions including a proposal to confer Honoris Causa, an honorary doctorate, to chief minister Nitish Kumar. The convocation, if organised, would take place in April or May this year, after a lull of seven years.

The proposal was put forward by a staunch Janata Dal (United) loyalist, Narendra Patel, who is also a member of the syndicate. Patel sought the permission of the vice-chancellor Rajendra Mishra in this regard. Mishra, who is officiating as the vice-chancellor, hurriedly gave a nod to appease the powers that be. It was seconded by Shivanand Singh, another member of the syndicate.

Rajendra Mishra is the acting vice-chancellor and the move to confer the Honoris Causa is being seen as a move by Mishra to appease Nitish in an effort to grab the post of vice-chancellor, said Arun Kumar Singh, general secretary, Bihar University Service Teachers’ Association .

Singh said: “The syndicate should do something concrete to usher in an era of academic growth. The idea of organising the convocation is only to confer the honorary degree. The governor must intervene and check sycophancy.”
