Gaya, Nov. 14: Magadh University administration has decided to launch the semester system for its postgraduate students from the next academic session.

The academic council of the university met on Sunday and approved the semester system. Once the new system is in place, examinations for the postgraduate courses are likely to be held every six months from the 2011-12 academic year.

A source said: “At present, the university offers post-graduate degrees in 22 subjects.”

A syllabus of each subject has been prepared, keeping the proposed semester system in mind.

The academic council also gave its not to the institute to begin postgraduate course in physiotherapy.

At present, students can only pursue a bachelor degree in physiotherapy at the Bodhgaya campus of Magadh University under the self-finance scheme.

The proposal to start the semester system at the post-graduate level and a physiotherapy PG course will be presented before apex bodies of the university such as the syndicate and the senate for the final approval.

Also on Sunday, a meeting of the Magadh University syndicate was held which approved promotion of teachers working with the constituent colleges of the institute. The academic council had in its July 5 meeting given the nod to the promotion of teachers.

The syndicate, however, did not approve the list for the selection of 22 principals of the constituent colleges. Interview to select the principals was held in the office of the directorate of distance education at the university’s headquarters in Bodhgaya between October 11 and 16.

Apart from the academic council and the syndicate, the affiliation committee of the meeting also met on Sunday.

It granted affiliation to some affiliated colleges, which operate under Magadh University and offer conventional courses in science, commerce and arts faculties.

The academic council, however, did not grant approval to start technical courses at the affiliated colleges. It said a review of the applications, made to start technical courses, would be done before granting approval.

The Magadh University syndicate also decided to celebrate the institute’s golden jubilee in 2012.
