Patna, Jan. 19: Chitrangshu Tewari, a Class XII student of Don Bosco Academy, does not dream of becoming a doctor or engineer like his classmates. He wants to be a civil servant and then enter politics.

Reason: He wants to have the power to change his society and take pro-active steps to support and protect the environment.

He has, in fact, already started working towards his goal and runs a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Green Brigade that works towards saving the environment and protecting child rights. In recognition of his achievements, the 7th United Nations Annual Youth Assembly recently awarded him the Outstanding Youth Achiever’s Recognition. He is one of the nine students from all over the world to be selected for this award.

“The youth assembly honours high school students who have made some contribution to a cause or shown leadership qualities in community service,” said Tewari. Youths, aged between 16 and 18, are awarded by the assembly for their contribution to the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.

Tewari started the NGO in 2005. Now, it has 12 core members and has earned a name for itself in community work.

“Each of us should try to make a difference to the world around us. Even little gestures can go a long way in solving major problems,” said Tewari.

His NGO was awarded the United Nations-promoted World Summit Youth Award for excellence on November 12 last year.
