Patna, Jan. 30: A 25-year-old youth fell to his death from the top floor of Marwari Awas, a hotel on Frazer Road, in the small hours on Monday.

The deceased, identified as Surendra Rai, used to work as a driver at the Marwari Awas.

Kotwali police said prima facie it appeared to be a case of accidental death.

Kotwali station house officer (SHO) Aman Kumar said: “Around 12.30am, Rai, who used to live in one of the rooms on the third floor of the building, fell off and died on the spot.”

Employees of the Marwari Awas spotted Rai’s body and informed the police. The body has been sent to Patna Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

Rai, a resident of Athmalgola block, and used to work at the Marwai Awas for the past two three years.

Aman said initial investigation does not hint towards suicide or murder.

Police sources said Rai was an alcoholic. However, whether Rai was under the influence of alcohol when he fell from the third floor is yet to be ascertained. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” the SHO said.

The hotel authorities refused to divulge any information about the incident.

Hotel manager Om Prakash did not speak to mediapersons.

In another incident, a Janta Dal (United) activist Anju Devi was found dead at the Sheikhpura Mor near Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), in the small hours on Monday. Devi (55), a resident of Sheikhpura Bagicha, was returning home after attending a meeting in the Khagaria district.

Her body bore injuries suggesting she was hit by a speeding vehicle.

According to family members, Devi was travelling in a bus.

Rajiv Singh, the SHO of Shastri Nagar police station, said around 2am, police received information about a body lying near the IGIMS. “From the cellphone details, we came to know the address of the victim,” Singh said.

He said prima facie it appeared to be a case of death in a road accident. Sources said, Devi, perhaps, got down from a bus at Sheikhpura Mor and was crossing the road when a speeding vehicle hit her.

No vehicle was seen parked in the area where the body was found.

Govind Kumar, son of the deceased, said he came to know about his mother’s death from the police.

“Both the legs of my mother were badly damaged. There were injuries on her head too,” Govind said, adding that he last spoke to his mother around 9pm.
