Transfer axe falls on cops for firing - Retired judge to monitor judicial probe

Patna, June 28: The Bagaha superintendent of police (SP) and the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) were transferred today for the June 24 firing incident in West Champaran. A judicial probe has also been ordered into the episode.

D.N. Jha, SP (vigilance) of the Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited would replace Bagaha SP Sunil Kumar, while Begusarai SDPO Lalit Mohan Sharma would replace SDPO Shailesh Kumar Sinha. The station house officer of Naurangia police station, Vinay Kumar Singh, has been suspended. The acting station house officer of Valmiki Nagar police station, Diwakar Kazi, would face disciplinary action for dereliction of duty.

The probe would be conducted under the supervision of a judicial commission headed by a retired judge of the Patna High Court. The home department has been asked to submit a proposal to the high court, requesting the latter to suggest the name of a judge to be appointed as the chairman of the judicial commission.

The action against the police officials was initiated on the recommendation of the probe team set up by chief minister Nitish Kumar. The team comprising S.K. Bhardwaj, additional director-general of police (law and order) and Anand Kishor, inspector-general (prisons and correctional services) submitted their report to the chief minister today.

BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said: “Police are harassing innocent people in the name of investigation.”
