Trans community protest blocks road

Around 100 trans persons carrying placards and banners staged a protest at Saguna Mor on Friday to protest an assault on a community member.

Patna: Around 100 trans persons carrying placards and banners staged a protest at Saguna Mor on Friday to protest an assault on a community member.

On Thursday, an eunuch was shot at and critically injured by a group of criminals at Maner in Patna rural. The victim, Shanti, has been admitted to a private hospital in Danapur.

The trans community blocked the traffic at Saguna Mor around 10am and shouted slogans against the police administration demanding arrest of the people behind the firing. The blockade held up the traffic on Bailey Road with long queues of vehicles on both flanks of the road, the brunt of which was borne by traders and office-goers. The blockade continued for more than two hours.

Sudhakar Agarwal, who owns a computer shop on SP Verma Road, said: "I had to face a tough time in reaching my shop from Khagaul. I had to wait at Saguna Mor for more than an hour. I had to change my usual route to reach the SP Verma Road."

The blockade was lifted only after Danapur police reached the spot and tried to pacify the trans people. The police had to lathicharge the proteste rs. Sources said after the lathicharge, the trans people became furious and started attacking the personnel and commuters passing by. They pelted stones on the personnel and injured half-a-dozen cops.

Danapur station house officer Sandeep Kumar said: "The situation was brought under control after we assured to take action against the people involved in the firing."

Sources said on Thursday there was an event at Daroga Rai House in Maner. As a large number of eunuchs had gathered to greet a new born, some of the trans people had differences with the guests. One of the guests had fired a shot at Shanti.
